Tiki Cat and Tiki Dog natural gourmet whole pet foods are new to Bare Essentials and, so far we like what we see! It is manufactured in a human-grade factory and is truly human-grade quality.

All products are made with whole meat from preferred, premium portions that are left whole and intact verses traditional meatloaf or other “mystery meat” pates. All meat ingredients are listed as in the primary flavor name without mystery or unnamed “ocean fish”, chicken and other inferior filler meat sources.

Our fish is caught from our own fishing vessels in the South Pacific – where mercury levels and pollutants are at their lowest possible levels. Our Tuna is caught with short lines (which catch smaller, younger fish) to eliminate concerns of mercury. We only catch seafood that is recommended for human consumption by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program. Our products are hand cut and filleted, hand packed, and canned fresh at the source. All agricultural ingredients are fresh and locally grown in Thailand. They are grown by natural human food-grade growers and are tested for pesticides, pathogens, heavy metals, antibiotics and other contaminants. None of our food ingredients are outsourced.

But what is “by-product meal” and “animal digest”? The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) defines chicken by-product meal as: “the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines.”

And the animal digest? Well, AAFCO defines it as: “material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and un-decomposed animal tissue.” “Animal tissue” can be from any source, and may include the remains of euthanized animals (and traces of the chemicals used for euthanasia).

Fillers and binders commonly used in pet foods could have a negative impact on the health of your furry friend.

Choose your pet’s chow as wisely as you do your own by avoiding these common fillers and binders, which lack nutritional value and are no one’s best friend.

Animal digest

This ingredient is essentially a cooked-down broth made from parts of unspecified animals. Though it’s untraceable and not allowed in organic pet foods, it is listed in some natural dog foods. There are no limits on the type of animals used; animal digest may include goats, pigs, horses, rats, roadkill, diseased animals, and even animals euthanized at shelters.

Brewers rice

These rice fragments are a byproduct of the rice milling process. Brewers rice contains far fewer nutrients than whole brown rice and is also much cheaper for manufacturers to procure. Look for brown rice on labels, instead.

Wheat gluten

This tough, sticky substance is left behind when starch is removed from wheat. It’s an inexpensive food-processing by product used as a binder in some pet foods and has little nutritional value.
