Winter Blues Got You Down?

One in sixteen people in the U.S. suffer from seasonal depression. Many more of us experience “winter blues”, a less severe form of this seasonal disorder. Winter blues, along with other forms of sadness and grief, are often a reaction to an imbalance in neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. When these brain chemicals are out of balance or there is a drop in serotonin, mood changes and melancholy are sure to follow.

One product that’s been successful in the war against seasonal depression is called Deprex by VÄXA. This doctor-formulated natural medicine was developed to provide relief from occasional emotional upset, mood imbalances and melancholy and even extended periods of sadness and grief.

The Deprex formula incorporates homeopathic remedies in an herbal and nutritional base. The formula complements the body’s ability to release serotonin. Serotonin plays an important role in mood regulation within the hypothalamus and the entire limbic system, the emotional center of the brain.

The individual homeopathic remedies in Deprex were selected to help the body naturally regulate hypothalmic activity and balance the natural production of serotonin and norepinephrine. Other homeopathic medicinals in this blend assist the body in managing the physical manifestations of these negative emotions including headaches, restlessness, trembling, digestive disorders, nervous exhaustion and sleep disturbances. Deprex is a gluten-free formula that safely supports healthy brain chemistry without sexual side effects, weight gain, and/or chemical dependency.

Omega-7: The Omega You Haven’t Heard About

Most people have heard of the essential fatty-acids Omega 3, 6 and 9—they’re likely already included in your daily supplement routine. But there’s a critical Omega fatty-acid commonly missing from the list: Omega 7.

Sea buckthorn has been found to contain high levels of Omega 7, and the oil from its berry and seed have been used for more than 1,300 years to promote health of the skin. Sea buckthorn is a deciduous shrub that produces a tiny but resilient fruit. The shrub produces an array of powerful nutrients, including Omega 7 as well as 3, 6 and 9. These nutrients help the plant resist the harsh weather conditions (such as high-salt atmosphere and high altitudes) of it’s environment.

The key source of sea buckthorn’s lauded skin support properties comes from a specific Omega-7 fatty acid, palmitoleic acid. This acid is a naturally-occurring component of healthy skin and is a highly effective antioxidant. It provides strong anti-aging support because of its ability to rein in free radicals. In addition to being vital to collagen production, this main constituent of sea buckthorn is also a strong emollient—a substance that soothes and moisturizes the skin and promotes the regeneration of tissue.

Sea buckthorn is available orally and topically, and our customers have found both forms helpful for dry skin and other problem skin conditions. At Bare Essentials Natural Market we carry sea buckthorn from New Chapter in oral form. Sibu makes both an oral supplement and an effective skin care line.

Employee Pick: Nubian Heritage’s African Black Soap

Picking one favorite is hard, but I’m going to have to go with Nubian Heritage’s African Black Soap.  Since using soap is a daily necessity, the way it effects my skin is important to me.  Soap can be harsh and drying, but the shea butter actually hydrates.  Also, the combination of ingredients in this particular bar make it effective for “eczema, acne, oily skin, psoriasis, and other skin ailments.”  Plus it smells great!

I feel good, too, knowing that Nubian Heritage is doing good things for good people… here’s a little about them:

“The company purchases ingredients directly from women cooperatives and indigenous     farmers in Africa, paying above market prices to help improve the standard of living for  those suppliers. They are working closely with local and international organizations, including ECOSERVE and AFRICARE, to protect the integrity of ingredients and improve production processes to ensure sustainable harvests. Partnering with organizations such as The Liberian Education Fund and Todee Mission, the company is working to build schools and provide access to education for impoverished girls in Africa, many of who are suppliers of Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter and other natural ingredients.”

Can’t Stand The Pain? Neither Can I!

My solution for tension headaches, lower back stiffness and pre-menstrual pain and cramping and is Multilieve.

Multilieve is an effective combination of herbs and minerals such as:

  • Magnesium and manganese: these minerals relax muscles and strengthen connective tissue to soothe muscular tension.
  • Cordyalis: this root herb invigorates blood, relieving minor abdominal pain, menstrual cramps and digestive discomfort.
  • California poppy: this herb promotes relaxation and relieves muscular soreness from overexertion.
  • Chinese red peony: calms and soothes tissues to provide relief from minor spasms and muscular discomfort.
  • Meadowsweet: a member of the rose family, it’s soothing for general stress and digestive discomfort.

Multilieve is a great alternative for someone who takes NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Aleve, aspirin, Celebrex) on a regular basis. While NSAIDs relieve the pain, they may also have negative long-term side effects. The alternative I choose, Multilieve, is 100% natural and safe for long-term use.
